Web Browsers and Color Management

Presenting photographs on websites so they look good for the majority of visitors can be a challenge, particularly for photographers.

A lot of computers have high end monitors. But the variety of ways that Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari (and the other web browsers) display colors means that to get consistent results across different browsers, images need to be prepared based on a lowest common denominator approach.

Fabio Pili has published an article on web browser color management that will be useful for photographers who want to use all the capabilities of their high end monitors when working with Photoshop, but also need to know how to prepare images so they look good when viewed in different web browsers.

I’ve added Fabio’s article to the list of useful resources on our How To article for photographers that covers preparing images for the web: Preparing Images for the Web: Color Profiles, sRGB and Adobe RGB.

Tony Hewitt and the Art of Vision

Tony Hewitt

TonyHewitt.com

The day I first met Tony Hewitt was also the day I – coincidentally – saw him present on the Art of Vision. His images have a lot of impact on their own, but if you enjoy photography and get a chance to hear Tony talk about his images, I strongly suggest you do so.

It has been a great pleasure to work closely with a lot more of Tony’s images, and help put together his new website: Tony Hewitt.

The website design is down to the incredibly talented Lauren Jury-Armitage of Jury Armitage Design – thanks Lauren, great to work with you again.

For photographers or those interested in the art of vision, it still isn’t too late to book a ticket to spend a day with Tony and some other great photographers onboard the True North – check out his incredible Australia Day photography workshop.

Baby and Child Photographer Sandy Metcalf

In business we talk a lot about ‘finding your niche’ and Sandy Metcalf has found hers. Sandy is a natural light photographer of babies, children and family in Sydney. Her style is simple, modern and soft. And that is exactly the same style used to launch her new website SandyMetcalf.com.au.

While it is a photography site and has beautiful photos Sandy knows her most valuable feature will be her blog. In Sandy’s niche her clients are not just looking for a great photographer but they want to see that special touch Sandy has to be able to work with their baby and little ones. While it’s only early days we can already see visitors will be spending as much time getting to know Sandy in her blog stories and personal insights as viewing her photo gallery.

Sports Photographer Emily Dimozantos

Emily Dimozantos has recently renamed her business Motion Photo. In launching her new site we worked with Emily to emphasise her specialisation in sports photography.

Our brief was to tighten up her existing design while integrating her new branding. We also integrated Emily’s website with her new ZenFolio account, which helps with image processing.

Using a blog for a photography website

Eternity Photography

John Rice, Eternity Photography

Some months ago now John Rice from Eternity Photography moved his website on to our WordPress based platform. And more recently he commissioned Tracy Graffin to upgrade his branding and website design.

The new design has a luminous quality to it, with beautiful attention to detail.

In redesigning the website, the navigational structure as well as the look were both very important. John does both wedding and portrait photography. Both of these areas were significant enough to his business to form the two primary sections of his site:

If you take a quick peek at John’s blog, you’ll also see a distinctly different design in place for that element.

I think a blog is a powerful tool for any business website. For a photography business, a blog is a wonderful opportunity to not only show examples of the photography, but to tell the story behind the shots.

Anyone looking to engage a photographer is spoilt for choice. Reading a photographer’s blog is a perfect way to get to know them and their style. A bride and groom get to spend a lot of time with their wedding photographer, and reading their blog can give a lot of clues as to how they go about their work.

Not only do blogs work well for people considering engaging you as a photographer, blogs are great for search engines. Each new blog post is a new page in your website (in the eyes of Google). And if you are writing about topics relevant to your potential customers, search engines will be able to include you in a lot more search result pages.

One important note about blogs and search engines: blogs help your website when they are part of your domain. If you set up a blog on somebody else’s domain, search engines may still index your posts and rank them in results, but they won’t help build your overall domain authority. So where possible, integrate your blog with the domain of your website.

A new full page image rotator (flash free)

Recently we did some work for Denis Glennon to implement a new full page image rotator that resizes automatically when the browser is resized.

Denis wanted to display some of his images with a full page effect that took advantage of larger monitors – he first saw the effect on Art Wolfe’s website.

James extended our existing image rotator plugin to implement the full screen effect. Images in the rotator set will expand to fill the available space, and if the visitor resizes their browser window, the images automatically resize as well.

The plugin doesn’t use Flash, so it is easy for site owners to add new images to their rotator sets. Not using Flash for the visual effects also means that rotators display correctly on iPhones and iPads.

You really need to check out the full effect on Denis’ website: Denis Glennon, Photographer – and make sure you resize your browser. The photographs he has on display are simply stunning.

The plugin can be used on any OM4 website. Check out the notes on the Image Rotator help page to find out more about setting them up. As you’ll be working with large images, make sure you read up on how to prepare image files before uploading.

Acorn Photo: a commercial photography website

Acorn Photo

Acorn Photo

When we first started work on the Moombaki website, Tracy Graffin introduced us to the work of Rob Frith and the talented team at Acorn Photo.  And now I am very pleased to welcome Acorn on to the OM4 platform.

Rob had a very elegant design in place already, so our job was to faithfully recreate the look on WordPress. We agreed to tweak the gallery presentation a bit, using multiple rows of thumbnails below the primary image. This technique has proved very popular, as it makes it fast and easy for visitors to navigate a set of portfolio images.

Clean and simple photography website design

Mark Greenland, Photographer and Poet

Mark Greenland, Photographer and Poet

We’ve recently worked with designer Tracy Graffin (again) to launch the new Mark Greenland Photography website.

Mark’s photography is stunning, and Tracy has put together a design that is elegant in its simplicity. Don’t be fooled, achieving a simple and clean design is not as easy as it looks.

You can catch Mark at the upcoming Light Fantastic 2010 event, organised by Nick Melidonis and Dale Neill.

Layered Gallery Thumbnails

Layered Gallery Thumbnails

We’ve used a layered thumbnail technique to present the galleries for this website.  This required some modifications to our Simple Gallery plugin that we are using for a few photography projects. By displaying a thumbnail for each gallery image at the bottom of the image area it is very easy to navigate the gallery. Those who like using the next/previous approach (using buttons or keys) can still navigate that way, but overall we wanted to make it very easy to scan the gallery and access specific images.

Icon PHOTO 09 photography competition

We’ve been working with Nick Melidonis and Denis Glennon recently helping to launch their Icon PHOTO 09 photography competition – entries opened today.

The competition looks beautiful, integrated as it is with the overall brand design developed by Tracy Graffin.

The entry process integrates custom uploading of images and size checking, PayPal payments and integration with a CampaignMonitor mailing list.
